House of the Dragon season 2 is just days away from its end on 2024 TV programming, and Rhaenyra bolstered the Blacks with two more dragons at the end of the penultimate episode. However, in Harrenhal, Daemon has been plagued by visions that may or may not all be caused by Alys Rivers. Although not everyone liked that Daemon remained in Harrenhal during the peak of season 2, it allowed the return of actors such as Milly Alcock and, more recently, Paddy Considine. When I spoke with director Geeta Vasant Patel earlier this season, she mentioned that Considine didn’t receive any praise for her most difficult episode of Season 1.
Before joining season 2 to direct episode 3, as well as the next season’s finale, Geeta Vasant Patel contributed to season 1 by directing episode 8, titled “Lord of the Tides,” which was an especially compelling watch. for Paddy Considine as King Viserys Targaryen. Although Viserys himself has never been as bad as in the episode that would end with his death, I still feel that it is Considine’s best painting in a season full of strong performances.
When I spoke to the director of the episode featuring Viserys’s final, harrowing fight against Rhaenyra, I noted that he had felt like Considine had been robbed of his rewards for it, and Patel responded:
I agree! We were all tired when he didn’t get a nomination, and no one else either. I was just confused. But my spouse thinks it’s because there have been so many other displays in his last few seasons for this awards race. My spouse, the expert who works in IT. [laughs]
Even if House of the Dragon isn’t a favorite to win awards like Game of Thrones in its heyday, there may actually have been at least a few nominations for Paddy Considine, right?And I’m not even talking about the big awards ceremonies like the Emmys and the Golden Globes. Across the Season 1 awards circuit, the only actors nominated were Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Milly Alcock, and Rhys Ifans. I’m not saying that any of those 4 deserved Congratulations, but why shouldn’t Considine have been on the list?
Of the entire first season, I would rank Viserys’ painful departure to sit on the Iron Throne one last time to protect Rhaenyra as one of the most memorable and iconic scenes. In fact, composer Ramin Djawadi helped make the series even more epic with suitably harsh music. It’s the best recipe for at least some awards, if not a trophy or two for Considine. Geeta Vasant Patel praised the actor further:
Paddy did a wonderful job in many ways. The reason I wanted to work on the exhibition, and spent seven years looking to be a part of it, was basically because of the actors involved and the writing they were given. I wanted to be a part of that narrative, and Paddy is the best example of a dream come true for a director. In this particular scene, he gave everything he had physically and mentally.
The final product of Viserys’ march to the Iron Throne was even harsher than originally anticipated. The moment the crown fell off Viserys, only to be picked up and placed back on his head via Daemon, was the result of a twist of fate on set. During rehearsals, after Paddy Considine removed the crown and picked it up through Matt Smith, the director and cast knew they had discovered something special by chance. And since Viserys died soon after, it was a big moment among the brothers who had rarely been in the same aspect of an argument in the entire series so far.
Overall, I still wish Paddy Considine would have gotten some awards since the premiere will be its only season as a regular series. Unfortunately, I don’t think his appearances in the final two episodes of Season 2 will be enough to qualify him for featured guest nominations on the upcoming awards circuit. At least it’s not complicated to rewatch its highlights as King Viserys Targaryen, as the full first season, as well as all of season 2 so far, can be streamed with a Max subscription. It remains to be seen if Considine will have any other appearances before the end credits of the 2024 TV show.
