Den of Thieves 2: Panther, an action mystery starring Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. , is new to theaters.
Rated R, Den of Thieves 2 – Pantera is the long-awaited sequel to the 2018 hit Den of Thieves, which starred Butler, Jackson, Pablo Schreiber and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson.
The official logline for the sequel reads, “In Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, Big Nick (Butler) is back on the hunt in Europe and closing in on Donnie (Jackson), who is embroiled in the treacherous and unpredictable world of diamond thieves and the infamous Panther mafia, as they plot a massive heist of the world’s largest diamond exchange.”
Written and directed by original Den of Thieves filmmaker Christian Gudegast, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera plays in Thursday previews before opening in theaters nationwide on Friday.
Currently, the only way to see Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is in theaters, so check local listings for showtimes. After that, the movie’s first choice when it comes to home entertainment will be premium video-on-demand virtual streaming.
While some studios take a wait-and-see approach with PVOD releases tied to a film’s monetary success, others stick to an established model. Den of Thieves 2: Pantera Studio Lionsgate tends to follow a trend with their movies, which have a 3 week to a month window in theaters before becoming available on PVOD.
For example, Lionsgate’s remake of The Crow and film adaptation of the video game Borderlands both made their PVOD debuts three weeks after they opened in theaters, while it took just over a month for the studio’s The Best Christmas Pageant Ever to appear on digital streaming.
As such, audiences can expect Den of Thieves 2: Pantera to arrive on PVOD any time between January 31 and February 7.
According to an agreement between Lionsgate and STARZ, Den of Thieves 2: Panther will first stream on the STARZ app.
However, the wait for Lionsgate videos to appear on STARZ is much longer than the time between the studio’s theatrical debut and PVOD debut. On average, the theatrical window for STARZ SVOD is five to six months.
For example, The Crow takes just under six months to arrive on STARZ (August 23, 2024, theatrical release/SVOD debut February 19), while The Best Christmas Pageant Ever will take about five months to begin streaming on STARZ (November 10, 2024, theatrical release/March 31, SVOD).
Similarly, Lionsgate’s Borderlands took only about five months to debut on STARZ (August 9, 2024, theatrical release/December 24, 2024, SVOD debut).
As such, audiences don’t expect to see Den of Thieves 2: Pantera on STARZ until between June 7 and July 4.
Den of Thieves 2: Panther opens Thursday before hitting theaters nationwide on Friday.
