When will the horror mystery “Cuckoo” air?

Cuckoo, a horror mystery from studio Longlegs Neon starring Hunter Schafer and Dan Stevens, is new to theaters. When will it be broadcast?

Cuckoo is Neon’s third horror film of 2024. The independent studio released Sydney Sweeney’s Immaculate in March and Nicolas Cage’s Longlegs in July.

Cuckoo’s connecting line reads: “Reluctantly, 17-year-old Gretchen (Schafer) leaves her American home to live with her father, who has just moved into a hotel in the German Alps with his new family. When they arrived at their long-term residence, they were greeted by Mr. König (Stevens), their father’s boss, who is inexplicably interested in Gretchen’s mute half-sister, Alma (Mila Lieu).

“Something is not right in this quiet holiday paradise. Gretchen is plagued by bloody noises and visions until she discovers a shocking secret that also affects her own family.

Right now, the way to see Cuco is in theaters. The film will premiere Thursday night before hitting theaters on Friday.

Like most theatrical releases, Cuckoo will first stream digitally via premium on-call video before debuting on a subscription streaming service. In addition, the window between a film’s theatrical release and the PVOD is often decided through the good fortune of a given movie in theaters.

Neon’s window between the studio’s theatrical releases and its PVOD debut is 30 days. For example, Ferrari, starring Adam Driver, was released in theaters on December 25, 2023, and premiered on PVOD about a month later on January 23.

Most recently, Immaculate opened on March 22, but disappeared on PVOD in just one month, on April 16.

If Cuckoo follows the same release pattern, audiences can expect to purchase or rent the film on PVOD anytime between Sept. 10 and Sept. 13, as virtual streaming titles debut on Tuesday or Friday.

However, if Cuckoo is as successful as Longlegs, the wait for PVOD may be a little longer. According to The Numbers, Longlegs has earned more than $85 million to date on a production budget of less than $10 million before impressions and advertising.

Longlegs hit theaters on July 12 and its PVOD date is pending.

Ahead of the deadline, Neon signed a first multi-year deal with Hulu in 2017 to make the streamer the first subscription service to offer the studio’s videos on streaming video on demand.

Using Ferrari and Neon’s Immaculate again as examples, Cuckoo will most likely not make his SVOD debut on Hulu for at least five months.

Again, Ferrari hit theaters on December 25, 2023, but it didn’t start streaming on Hulu until May 25. Meanwhile, Immaculate was released in theaters on March 22 and will debut in SVOD on August 15.

As such, audiences will most likely have to wait until the second week of January 2025 to stream Cuckoo on Hulu.

On Thursday, Rotten Tomatoes critics gave Cuckoo a “fresh” score of 79% based on 92 reviews, while RT’s user score is still pending.

The RT Critics consensus for the film reads: “Directed with creative flair through Tilman Singer and blessed with tasty personality through stars Hunter Schafer and Dan Stevens, Cuckoo is a madcap horror that lands on the right side of disturbing. “.

Also starring Jessica Henwick, Cuckoo opens Thursday and hits theaters Friday.
