This weekend, the last of the upcoming horror videos is here with Blumhouse’s Imaginary. The film centers on an evil teddy bear named Chauncey who terrorizes a boy who sees him as his new friend after locating him in his family’s new home. What was the concept of Chauncey the Bear that caught the attention of its writers? When CinemaBlend spoke with co-writer-director Jeff Wadlow (along with producer Jason Blum) about making the film, he shared the origins of the animal killer.
When I sat down with the filmmakers of Imaginary, I was curious to know if the film’s harmful imaginary friend is different from the haunting stuffed animal we see in the remake. Especially since, in theory, “imaginary” can encompass just about anything. Here’s what Wadlow shared:
From the beginning, I knew I wanted to make this movie about imaginary friends and Greg [Erb] and Jason [Orenland]; My co-writers wanted to make an evil teddy bear. And his idea was to call it Chauncey. Other people have asked me: where does the so-called Chauncey come from? And I’m just saying, I don’t know. Greg and Jason on the first day said, “We have to call him Chauncey. “I like it, yes. [Laughs] I mean, that’s what I love to do as a director. You know, when I hear a clever concept, I don’t have to question it. If it’s a clever concept, it’s in the movie.
Hey, it’s not that deep. According to the co-writer and director of Imaginary, it would still be a teddy bear from the start, which makes a lot of sense given that this is the maximum variety of stuffed animals. And as for the character’s unique name, it turns out that it seems to have come from a random stroke of genius on the part of one of his other collaborators.
While we’re keeping Chauncey’s origins in the context of the film for now, so you have a chance to enjoy it yourself in theaters, Wadlow also talked to us about how Chauncey as a character was replaced over the course of Imaginary’s development. Here’s what he had to say:
There was an early draft of the script that was much more Chucky, where Chauncey talked a lot, ran around and did things, and we saw that happen. And I think Greg [Erb] and Jason [Blum], my collaborators, I enjoyed Running with them, but I think at first they saw the movie a little bit more like that and I was more interested in the subjective side. How might we play with the audience’s understanding of what is genuine and what is not?And we were looking to locate the intersection of the two. And it was Blumhouse’s Cooper Samuelson who did the artwork for Jason, who was adamantly opposed to Chucky’s version. It said, “It’s not going to work. ” And he was right. This forced us to take a closer look at the kind of global imaginary that was being created.
Jason Blum bumped into John Krasinski, who also has a movie about an imaginary friend, and was uncomfortable: “I hope he’s not mad at us. “
As Wadlow shared, Imaginary has in the end become more of a combination of mental horror and horror fantasy when it hit theaters, than stepping on Chucky’s bloody legacy. While Chauncey is forging his own path away from other horror movies like this one, oddly enough, this is rarely the only imaginary buddy movie among 2024 movies. John Krasinski also directed a family film called IF, starring Ryan Reynolds and Steve Carell.
While Chauncey is now touring theaters around the world, you can find out what critics are saying about it by adding CinemaBlend’s Imaginary review. You can also find out how the actors felt running around with a killer teddy bear on set while we’re on the subject.
