NEWS. . . BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
Netflix has a huge movie in the works, directed by some of Hollywood’s biggest directors, with a star-studded cast led by Millie Bobthrough Brown, and said to have grossed a whopping $320,000,000 ($252 million).
It’s possible that this number of rumors will also increase, as enthusiasts are still waiting for an official release date for The Electric State.
The only thing that’s been said so far is that the next blockbuster to be introduced to Marvel alums Joe and Anthony Russo, who have directed two Avengers movies, will be released in 2024.
To date, a few main points have been revealed about the film, which is an adaptation of Simon Stålenhag’s 2018 graphic novel of the same name.
What we do know is that it follows Stranger Things star Brown, 20, as Michelle, an orphaned teenager who travels the American West in search of her younger brother in a retro-futuristic past.
A gentle but mysterious robot and an eccentric drifter join her on her journey.
She is joined in the cast by Chris Pratt, Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci and Jason Alexander, as well as the voices of Brian Cox, Anthony Mackie, Billy Bob Thornton and Megalopolis star Giancarlo Esposito.
On the book’s publisher’s website, he aptly describes the graphic novel, set in 1997, as “Stranger Things Are Found Along the Road. “
The Russo brothers have been planning editing their film since 2017, when they acquired the rights to pre-edit The Electric State, after what they described as a “fierce bidding war,” according to Deadline.
It was then announced in December of that year, with the brothers generating it through Russo Brothers Studio and It and soon Andy Muschietti of The Flash directing it.
Nearly seven years later, enthusiasts have yet to see a poster, official image, or even trailer for the film that looks set to be Netflix’s next big blockbuster.
After all, the Russos made one of the most-watched streamer videos of all time on The Gray Man in 2022, which ranks sixth on Netflix’s overall list of the top videos with 139,300,000 views in its first 91 days.
The film did so well that Netflix announced a sequel, bringing back star Ryan Gosling and the Russo brothers, just days after the first film’s release, though it’s still in “active development” two years later, as creatives research to come up with a story.
This may partly explain why the electric state’s budget has reached $320 million, according to World of Reel, as well as its long gestation period.
It will also be released in theaters before streaming on Netflix, since it was first and foremost a commission for which Universal won the distribution rights in 2020.
However, after 3 years between the acquisition and the conclusion of the distribution agreement for the Russos, a delay occurred after the deal fell through.
In June 2022, they were transferred to Netflix due to Universal replacing Brain with a theatrical release.
There had also been delays before while the production waited for the Russo brothers to film The Gray Man and for Brown to film the fourth season of Stranger Things.
Tragically, when filming finally began in October 2022, it was cut short a month after a crew member was killed in a car accident.
Then, the director concluded in February 2023.
However, it was not until earlier this year that new shots were fired, between March and April.
So, after years of preparation and probably a few months away from its release, The Electric State remains a mystery to fans.
Metro. co. uk has reached out to representatives for Joe and Anthony Russo and Netflix for comment.
The Electric State still has a release date, but it’s expected for later in 2024.
